| Description/History |
| "I do not know if you remember the tale of the girl who saves the ship under mutiny by sitting on the powder barrel with her lighted torch and all the time knowing that it is empty? This has seemed to me a charming image of the women of my time. There they were, keeping the world in order by sitting on the mystery of life, and knowing themselves that there was no mystery." -Isak Dinesen Anna Falkoner grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. Like most schoolchildren in the country, she was raised with the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Like many of her famous countrymen, she had a talent for words. It would not prove to be her only talent Even as a child, she had a knack for taking the sad, decrepit plants her mother tried o raise and nursing them to health. It wasn't something she gave much focus on; just something to occupy her time between school, schoolwork and chores. She was a teenager before she realized she had a way with people, as well. She was shy, but once broken out of her shell, she could apply that same coaxing technique to influence people, whether in person or on paper. At the encouragement of her writing teachers, she studied literature and composition at the University of Copenhagen, publishing short stories in a few literary magazines before finishing school. Her continued botanical prowess, combined with repeating unconsciious themes in her work led her Mythology professor, actually a Verbena Gardener of the Tree, to take her in and show her a larger world. Awakened into a very traditional Norse Verbena cabal, Anna had trouble adjusting taking to the what she felt were extreme viewpoints of hew fellowes. More drawn to the quiet Nordic virtues of keeping the keys and the hearth, rather than the Valkyrie warrior ideal of her mentor, and devoted herself to Frigg, goddess of the household and Freya, goddess of women. Her mentor wouldn't listen to her quiet arguements of tradition, and power that was just as relevant, so eventually, she left, falling in with the Twisters of Fate instead out of slightly more common interests. She came into the coffee business by accident, almost. Doing research for a book in Hawaii, she took a tour of a coffee plantation and was enthralled by the feel of rich volcanic soil beneath her fingers and bare toes, and the sensation of life all around hr while she stood surrounded by coffee plants. Recalling a novel she'd read by one of her countrywomen when in univsersity, and set to learning what she could about the business, selling her house in Denmark to relocate. The plantation in the Black Isles she found up for sale had done poorly for the past twenty years. Rumors of the ghosts of murdered slaves cursing the land abounded, and the previous owner had fallen into delicate health. The moment she curled her bare toes into the rich earth of a fallow field, though, she sensed potential. Gently, she began to coax life out of the soil again, and ease the troubled spirits of the place. Fensalir Coffee Company - named after the mythological hall of Frigg, wife of Odin - is moderately successful in the Isles, as well as in select specialty coffee shops as far as Seattle and Florence. Anna has avoided negotiating any contract with a larger corporation such as Starbucks, preferring to examine ripe coffee cherries herself along her employees and roast her beans in old-fashioned copper roasters twenty feet from her back door. She still writes, most of her book profits being sunk back into her coffee busines. She has published three novels, all involving heroines who manage to triumph over the adversities in their worlds in subtle, but effective ways.
