Description/History
Ingrid Stern was barely two years old when her father was killed on the Western Front during WWI. He existed in her memory alone; the war hero who died for the Fatherland, an image cultivated by her mother and grandparents. It was that ghost that helped her family cling to their pride in the years after the war. She grew up near Munich in the days of the Weimar Republic

From Munich, she went to study at the Camridge University. There, she flirted intellectually with Marxism and made her first contact with the Techocracy's Analytical Reckoners, the pre-defection Virtual Adepts. Taken under the wing of Roger 'NemaTrode' Thackery, her mentor originally urged her to stay in Britain as Hitler's Third Reich cemented power in Germany, forseeing trouble arising due to a part of her background she found insignificant. Ingrid's paternal grandmother had been born into a Jewish family, and although she'd converted to Catholicism when she married her grandfather, that legacy would condemn her and her descendants under the Reich's racial purity laws. Eventually, Thackery's protests won out against a Union who saw an agent who would be far more valuable in Berlin than anywhere in England

Officially (although not always practically) exempt from the horrible persecution 'full blooded' Jews suffered in the Third Reich,Ingrid also enjoyed a rare breed of protection during majority of war and pre-war days, from the mutually exclusive efforts of Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, and her patrons within the Technocratic Union. The former, sickened by SS actions against Jews in Poland, shielded Ingrid as he had done with hundreds of other individuals with yellow stars on their coats, and made her mathematical talent and British education invaluable in deciphering Allied codes; the latter, ironically, English cryptographers working to crack the Enigma machines out of Bletchley Park, who placed subtle pressure on Union agents in Germany to keep her from serious harm.

Her protected position took a turn for the worse when in June, 1944, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler assumed command of the Abwehr, and a month later, Canaris was arrested for involvement in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler. The Abwehr was assimilated into the Sicherheitsdienst(SD), and Ingrid found herself out of a job.

Between July 1944 and February of 1946, Ingrid vanished from official records. The Union, busy shifting their allegiance to Allied forces after the revelation of Hitler's occult dabblings, could not devote the manpower needed to locate one insignificant operative. The rumor is that she was arrested by the SS while trying to flee to Switzerland and liberated by the Americans, with whom she turned up later acting as an interpreter for German POWs captured in France. Whatever happened to her in those months she has never spoken of, but it seemed to have left her frozen in that moment - in the fifty or sixty ntervening years, she has shown no signed of advancing in age. After the war was over, she was settled in the American Zone of Berlin, but quickly crossed into the Soviet Zone - only to vacate Germany entirely when her mentor withdrew the Reckoners from the Technocracy and defected to the Council of Nine

After a several years of hiding in Horizon from Technocratic persecution, Ingrid returned to Earth, settling into a seemingly mundane life in the United States. In truth, in recent years her pursuits have shifted from trying to affect the greater world around her to slightly more esoteric goals.
